Personal exhibition of Santiago Morilla

INDEX FALLS is an art project based on the cyclical rise and fall of the economic benefits of financial oligarchy, produced in Carrara by Spanish artist Santiago Morilla (Madrid, 1973).

The characters inhabiting Santiago Morilla’s pediments are inspired by classic models, which the artist revisits to provide an adequate iconography for the contemporary power of finance. The heroes chiseled in high and low relief on the pediments of the temples of power are obviously acephalous, or rather blindfolded, deprived of their own identity – like any other gear in the inner workings of a more and more impalpable machine. The search for one’s own individuality must necessarily follow one’s personal needs and logic, which lead to a subjective and direct defense against the inevitable fall.
In this sense, the Carrara marble quarries are engraved with the images of figures caught in the very moment before their fall, which are projected in large scale against the embankment, transforming the quarry itself into a pediment, and the mountain into a temple.
